Insurance & Payment

Understanding Your Lactation Coverage

Gentle Latch is a private, self-pay practice focused on providing personalized, unhurried care for you and your baby.

Payment is due at the time of your visit, and I’ll provide everything you need for possible reimbursement. A detailed superbill (claim form) will be provided for you to submit to your insurance.

I’m happy to guide you through how to submit your claim after your visit.

Many families receive partial or full reimbursement, depending on their individual plan. Please note that reimbursement is not guaranteed and varies by insurance provider.

Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), many insurance plans include coverage for breastfeeding support, counseling, and equipment. However, coverage for private, out-of-network lactation services can vary.

Frequently Asked Questions : Insurance & Payment

Do you accept insurance? I am a private, self-pay practice. I do not bill insurance directly. However, I provide a detailed superbill after every visit that you can submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement. Many families receive partial or full reimbursement depending on their plan.

What is a superbill? A superbill is an itemized receipt with all the medical codes your insurance needs to process a reimbursement claim. I provide one after every visit — you simply submit it to your insurance company.

Will I definitely get reimbursed? Reimbursement is not guaranteed and varies by plan. Under the Affordable Care Act, many plans are required to cover breastfeeding support — but out-of-network coverage varies. Calling your insurance ahead of time gives you the best picture of what to expect.

What do I say when I call my insurance? Here is a script you can use:

"Hi, I'd like to ask about my coverage for out-of-network lactation consulting services. The provider is an IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant). Can you tell me if lactation counseling is covered under my plan? The CPT codes typically used are 99211 and S9443. Do I need a referral or pre-authorization? And what is my out-of-network deductible and reimbursement rate?"

Write down the name of the person you spoke with, the date, and what they told you. This protects you if there is ever a question later.
